The Feasibility Study for the rehabilitation of the Craiova - Drobeta Turnu. Severin - Caransebes railway line, part of the Orient/East-Mediterranean Corridor, analyses the existing RW alignment starting with Craiova station at km 248 + 760 and ending just before the entry into Caransebes Station at km 474 + 925.
The Craiova-Caransebeș railway section has a length of 226 km. Both passenger and freight trains run on this line, currently counting 32 section points. The existing infrastructure is far from the TEN-T standards, as well as the requirements of the TSI, being under low maintenance conditions, most of its structures being near the limit of the technical life. It does not comply with the new EN regulations and norms, having areas of instability and presenting geotechnical, hydrological, hydrogeological risks.
The line crosses the complex area from the morphological point of view and, therefore, the presence of major works such as tunnels, bridges and consolidation works is important.
With the signing of the contract in question, the company CFR S.A. aims to improve transport standards by aligning with European ones.
The most important data of the existing line are shown below:
- Route length: 226 km
- Full electrified line:
- Double-electrified: line Craiova-Strehaia (60 km),
- Single-electrified: Strehaia -Drobeta - Tr. Severin - Caransebeș is a single electrified line (166 km)
- Sectioning points (railway stations (CF) and moving stops) : 32
- Tunnels: 11
- Major Bridges (with span over 10 m): 55
- Minor Bridges (with span under 10 m): 65
The engineering services, started on November 2018 in JV with Italferr S.p.A. and I.S.P.C.F. S.A., are still ongoing.
